Celebrating 42 years in business

In 1975, Ken Pitts, the founder of Frugal Framer opened a small frame shop on Wall Street in downtown Asheville.  After ten years on Wall Street, Frugal Framer moved to the current location on Cherry Street in the historic Montford neighborhood. A second retail location was opened on Hendersonville Road in 2009 and continues to serve South Asheville.  In 2015 Frugal Framer celebrated forty successful years in business. 2015 also brought a change in ownership of Frugal Framer as Ken Pitts began the transition into retirement. The new owner, Jennifer Pearson is a former Frugal Framer employee who re-joined the company. Jennifer has a background in architecture and design as well as years spent as an artist and framer.  The entire Frugal Framer staff is excited about growth and change, and look forward to many more years serving Asheville's eclectic, vibrant community.

  • "Frugal Framer provides incredible service and value to the customer.  My experience there was one of patience, competence and care for my needs as a customer -- it is rare to find any retail store that is so committed to providing such high quality service." ~Carmen
  • "My project was extremely custom and they walked with me every step of the way: offering suggestions, working with the material and recommending size based on my layout needs. They are competitively priced (in fact, the best prices I could find in the area). I will certainly use Frugal Framer again.  They have my strongest recommendation." ~Holly
  • "I am a Set Decorator for movies and work a great deal in cities other than my home base of Los Angeles.  In Asheville, for a movie called Loomis Fargo, (aka Armored Car Project), I was saddled with the task of finding most of what we needed in North Carolina, so that production could take full advantage of the tax incentives and make our budget adequate. A task which I have had difficulties with in other locations is finding a framer for the artwork.  It is sometimes troublesome.  But to my great surprise, that was not the case in Asheville.  Frugal Framer took on the job and fulfilled our needs completely.  The entire staff of Frugal Framer was a real joy to work with.  I estimate that we framed more than 80 pieces in the two months of filming in Asheville. I was astounded by the selection of their stock. Their service was fantastic and the prices were well below other places that I have worked. Frugal Framer will be a vendor which I will use again even from other locations.  What a find." ~David Smith, Set Director
